Cross Country Gear

topic posted Mon, February 4, 2008 - 2:15 PM by  Bombadil
Hi all. I'm new here. I live near Mt. Baker am on a budget and looking to get back into cross country skiing. Yeah, it is totally ridiculous that I live so close to the snow and have spent most of my winters complaining about the rain. I'll spare you the boring details. Now I've been renting some gear and getting out even just for sledding and the lust for the outdoors is getting to me.
Does anybody know where I could find good used gear? Track skis would be fine for now. I'd be willing to learn telemark if I had cool patient peeps to practice with. I can trade Professional Massage for gear as well. Also thinking about building a sauna for friends to sweat in after a cold day. Only five minutes from North Fork Brewery!

    Hey Bombadil,
I had some good luck with Craigslist. Both buying and selling, actually. But make sure you're getting gear that matches up. I.e., boots and bindings that fit together. SNS and NNN are the two main systems, but there is also a BC (back country) version of each. You might also run across the good ole three-pin variety. Also, make sure you recognize the difference between classic skis (with scales) and waxless. Hope I'm not insulting your intelligence with those factoids.

More buying tips: REI is having their big winter sale starting Saturday. I see x/c gear in the bargain basement at the Seattle store all the time. And if you're ever in Seattle, go to Second Ascent in Ballard. They have tons of used gear. I wonder if that rental joint on 542, next to the Wake n Bakery, has used gear. You know it?

If you're not in a big hurry, look at ebay over the summer. I bought good, new bindings that way in July.

Thanks for the tips. Wish I could get to Seattle but not convenient for me. I know there's a WWU gear sale too at some point, probably post-season.
